Nicklaus Children’s Designated National Program Office for Victor Center for Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has been designated the national program office for the Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases, an entity dedicated to the prevention of inherited diseases common among the Jewish population.

The Victor Center was founded in 2002 by Lois B. Victor in partnership with Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia. Ms. Victor lost two children to a Jewish genetic disease before a test for the disorder became available. Today, simple tests can identify carriers of more than 200 disorders, including 50 that are common among the Ashkenazi Jewish population.

January 30, 2018 – Carol and Harold Baxter’s Everglades Island home was the setting for an intimate reception honoring Barbara and Jack Nicklaus and their Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. The reception took place Jan. 16. The evening included cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and an update on the impact that Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is having on lives, locally and globally.

Santa and his elves surprise hospitalized patients

December 05, 2017 – Santa Claus and his elves made a surprise appearance and distributed gifts to patients, many of whom will spend the holiday season at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. The event was made possible thanks to the Vallejo-Fraiz family, who are longtime supporters of the hospital, and arrange for Santa to visit the hospitalized children.

December 02, 2017 – CureDuchenne Cares and The Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Brain Institute hosted a free educational and social event for Duchenne family and caregivers. Attendees were able to learn about important DMD care topics, share their practical advice and connect with other families.

2016 was a milestone year for Miami Children’s Health System. After a half-decade of planning and construction, we proudly opened doors to the hospital’s new 213,000-square-foot Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion. Nicklaus Children’s set its sights on becoming an early adopter of accreditation by DNV GL — Healthcare and in 2016 became the first children’s facility in South Florida to attain this new heightened accreditation status.

Annual Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenantion (ECMO) Reunion

November 05, 2017 – Two dozen former ICU patients had a great time today reuniting with their care teams at the annual ECMO reunion. ECMO stands for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenantion which is essentially a heart lung bypass that allows our most sick patients time to heal by performing their heart and lung functions for them. Nicklaus Children's Hospital has providing patients with this lifesaving technique for more than 20 years.

New treatment labeled "a game changer" for patients with diabetes

November 03, 2017 – Nicklaus Children’s Palm Beach Gardens Outpatient Center kicked off National Diabetes Month by introducing a new treatment option for children with Type 1 diabetes, the Medtronic MiniMed 670G system, sometimes called an “artificial pancreas,” consistently measures blood sugar, predicts when a rise or fall is going to occur, and adjusts itself to deliver precise doses of insulin, requiring minimal interaction from the patient.

May 06, 2017 – A multidisciplinary clinical team at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital used magnetic-resonance guided focused ultrasound — a form of incisionless surgery — to ablate a centrally located brain tumor in a young patient experiencing tumor-associated seizures.

May 02, 2017 – Dr. Moises Simpser, pediatric pulmonologist at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, founded the nation’s first Ventilator Assisted Children’s Center (VACC) Camp 1986. In honor of Dr. Simpser’s leadership, Nicklaus Children’s medical staff has renamed the camp with his name.
