Dr. Adele Schneider retires from Jewish Genetics Work

Dr. Schneider was among a pioneering group of doctors who made screening for Jewish genetic diseases more commonplace. By screening patients for genetic diseases and then using in vitro fertilization, she helped ensure babies would not be born with these diseases. 

When she started, Jewish genetic screenings included five diseases. Now they screen for more than 200, 96 of which apply to Jewish communities.

Beckwith-Wiedemann Conference Held at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital

August 30, 2018 – Families from all around the world traveled to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in July for an educational conference about Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS), a congenital, genetic condition that can cause premature birth, hypoglycemia, abdominal wall defects, abdominal malignancies and macroglossia (enlarged tongue).

Diabetic children learn about nutrition and keeping healthy at Camp Roaring Sun

July 11, 2018Camp Roaring Sun, which began Monday and runs through Friday, allowed children ages 6 through 12 to take part in traditional camp activities such as swimming, playing outside, and going to a baseball game. All the activities are monitored by Nicklaus pediatric endocrinology nurses to ensure a safe and healthy environment.

New Device Helps Children with Drug-Resistant Epilepsy Manage Seizures

April 25, 2018 – Grant is the first pediatric patient in South Florida to utilize the SenTiva VNS device, which is currently the smallest and lightest responsive therapy for epilepsy available on the market. The device, used in combination with epilepsy medications, has been shown to be effective in reducing seizure frequency and duration.

Nicklaus Children’s Designated National Program Office for Victor Center for Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has been designated the national program office for the Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases, an entity dedicated to the prevention of inherited diseases common among the Jewish population.

The Victor Center was founded in 2002 by Lois B. Victor in partnership with Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia. Ms. Victor lost two children to a Jewish genetic disease before a test for the disorder became available. Today, simple tests can identify carriers of more than 200 disorders, including 50 that are common among the Ashkenazi Jewish population.
