Kimberly's story (juvenile arthritis)

January 30, 2012 – Kimberly won't let juvenile arthritis to stop her from dancing. At 10 years old she is an Irish dancing champion, participating in national competitions. Kimberly has been a patient at the Division of Rheumatology for eight years, treated with medications that do not contain steroids.

Gianna's Success Story

January 26, 2012 – Gianna, spent eight days in Nicklaus Children's Hospital. Her parents speak wonders of the surgeons and nurses that tended to her daughter during that time.

Cameron's Success Story

January 26, 2012 – The first sign of trouble came in June when Cameron came home from day camp with a cough and fever. A swab test at the pediatrician’s office suggested Cameron did not have the H1N1 virus. But within a week her condition had worsened. Within days of hospitalization, Cameron was in a coma and was placed on a ventilator for complications later proven to be associated with H1N1. When her condition continued to deteriorate, doctors suggested she be transferred to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, for advanced care.

Tania's Scoliosis Success Story

January 24, 2012 – Tania was eight years of age when was diagnosed with scoliosis. As she grew older, it got worse and so she had surgery with one of the best doctors in Nicklaus Children's Hospital.

Ryan's Success Story

January 24, 2012 – Ryan and his cousin were throwing Chinese stars into a tree when Ryan's hand slipped and he cut his finger. The only doctor and hospital that would take Ryan (due to the intricate possible tendon injury) was Dr. Perlyn and Nicklaus Children's Hospital.

Natalie's Miracle Story

January 24, 2012 – At just four days old, Natalie came down with a bad case of jaundice and dehydration. She was scheduled to see Dr. Ana Paredes for hydronephosis of her left kidney. Tests showed that she was born with congenital heart defects, more specifically Shone's complex. Within the hour, Natalie was transferred to cardiac intensive care, where she waited to undergo open heart surgery.

Martina's Success Story

January 24, 2012 – Martina has down syndrome and a cardiac condition. Her picture with seventeen teddy bears she received at Nicklaus Children's Hospital after a successful open heart surgery done in 1998 was part of the fifty years anniversary campaign of Nicklaus Children's Hospital.

Jessica's Success Story

January 24, 2012 – Jessica was a patient five years ago. She moved to Nicklaus Children's Hospital from Palms West in West Palm Beach because she had a large brain tumor and hydrocephalus. Her parents weren't sure she would make it but today she is a survivor because of Nicklaus Children's Hospital.

Jennifer's Spinal Surgery Success Story

January 24, 2012 – Jennifer just got hired here at Nicklaus Children's Hospital! Not only does she feel so proud and lucky, but she also feels very honored to be a part of a hospital where she had a serious back surgery done several years ago.

Janiery's Success Story

January 24, 2012 – Janiery was born May 16th, 2003 with a double outlet right ventricle with sub-pulmonary stenosis and transposition of the great vessel. Thanks to the cardiac team of doctors and the man with the hands of miracles, Dr. Hannan, today she is seven and has had all of her surgeries.

Barbara's Success Story

January 24, 2012

When Barbara was hospitalized, the hospital was called Variety Children's Hospital. She had congenital hip problems and had many operations before moving to Miami in 1953.

Earl's Success Story

January 24, 2012 – Earl was a former patient at Nicklaus Children's Hospital. In 1958, his mother brought him to Miami from Waycross, GA. He suffered from severe problems after being struck by a car in Waycross where we lived at the time. He was brought to what was known at that time as the Variety Children’s Hospital. His mother was a single parent and was told prior to coming that he would never walk again. Earl was diagnosed with Polio.

Dana's Success Story

January 24, 2012 – Dana was brought in after a fifty five minute grand mal seizure on July 11, 1976 (the day before I turned 6). Dana was brought in on a rescue truck, not an actual ambulance.

Cynthia's Success Story

January 24, 2012 – When Cynthia's parents were vacationing in Miami in 1957, she was admitted for Friedlander's pneumonia to the Children's Hospital in Coral Gables.  She was only two years old. Cynthia had been suffering in North Carolina with bronchial asthma and after speaking to a few different people her parents knew they needed to take me south to get better. 

Asher's Success Story

January 24, 2012 – Asher did not breathe for the first twelve to fifteen minutes after birth. Suspecting seizure activity following the asphyxia, the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) physician at Health Park recommended Asher be transported to Nicklaus Children's Hospital for the cutting edge cooling therapy being used to treat oxygen deprived patients. 

Andrea's Success Story

January 24, 2012 – In May of 2008, Andrea was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the brain stem. She was admitted to the Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, for surgery and treatment.

Sebastian's Success Story

January 20, 2012 – Within ten hours of being born, Sebastian was diagnosed with tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF). The day after he was born, he was flown to Nicklaus Children's Hospital where he had an operation to repair his esophagus.

Jennifer Joy's Success Story

January 20, 2012 – Jennifer was born a premature baby. She was in the NICU for about two weeks. She was not expected to love past the age of five, and without her initial diagnosis, she would not be alive today.

Melissa's Success Story

January 18, 2012 – Melissa was born on July 16, 1992 and was diagnosed with a Double Outlet Right Ventricle. She was taken to Nicklaus Children's Hospital for all her tests, which included x-rays, echo's, ekg's, heart catheterizations, and blood work. Also, many times she was taken to the emergency room for care. Each time she had a catheterization done she was admitted to the short stay unit.

Keith's Success Story

January 18, 2012 – After having his arm set wrong twice by two different orthopedics, his parents immediately took him to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, where he received the treatment he needed.
