A Limitless Life for Piero

June 08, 2017 – Weighing only 2.9 pounds, Piero was intubated to help his developing lungs receive oxygen. The baby boy was transferred to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, a referral center for some of the most critically-ill infants in the state with a Level III and II NICU, to undergo specialized care and evaluation.

Patient of the Month: Bi'Yanie

June 06, 2017 – At a young age, Bi’Yanie was diagnosed with sickle cell, a blood disorder that causes the cells to take on a crescent or sickle shape and can lead to very painful episodes called crises. Today, Bi’Yanie is getting stronger by the day, thanks to the bone marrow transplant she received at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

Asnay Stands Up to Cerebral Palsy

May 08, 2017 – Asnay Machado is an ambitious Westland Senior High School student with dreams of becoming a lawyer one day. Asnay, who was born with cerebral palsy, recently enjoyed a boost in confidence thanks to a surgery at Nicklaus Children’s that has enabled him to stand up straight for the first time.

Patient of the Month: Anabella

April 10, 2017 – ​Meet our April Patient of the Month, Anabella. During an early check-up, Anabella was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition called atrial septum defect, or a hole in her heart.

A Healthy Life Ahead for Elias

March 23, 2017 – The family shared video clips of the quirky movements with Elias' pediatrician. The doctor immediately sent them to the nearest emergency room, where they ran a number of tests. They soon learned Elias was suffering from seizures due to cortical dysplasia, a congenital malformation in the brain which can lead to pediatric epilepsy conditions.

Devon, Determined to Stand

March 15, 2017 – At around 6 months of age, Devon's mother started noticing that he wasn't meeting his developmental milestones. By the time he was 2 years old, he was diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy and his muscle development was impaired. Surgery, physical therapy, and Devon's own determination brought his quality of life beyond what his mother had initially thought possible.

Hallie Travels Around the World for a Cure

March 14, 2017 – Hallie McKeithen traveled all the way from China to undergo surgery at Nicklaus Children's Brain Institute to treat her seizures. Thanks to the treatment received, Hallie is now seizure free. 

Patient of the Month: Milagros

March 08, 2017 – At 12 years old, Milagros was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack itself. In Milagros’ case, the disease attacked her kidneys, and a few years after her diagnosis, her kidneys completely shut down.

Patient of the Month: Lukas

February 07, 2017 – As a newborn, Lukas was in cardiac arrest and brought to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, where he underwent open heart surgery and placed on a Cardiopulmonary Bypass Machine, which stabilized his condition.

Sydnie's Second Chance

January 23, 2017

While her high school senior peers were trying on prom dresses and applying to college, Sydnie Romero was grappling with a decision that would be tough for anyone, let alone a chronically ill 17-year-old. Sydnie was born with sickle cell disease, a genetic disorder in which bone marrow produces defective hemoglobin that can block blood supply to parts of the body, resulting in “pain crises,” which are episodes of severe pain that can last for hours to days.

Young Girl Born with Birthmark on Her Lip has Surgery that Will Change Her Life

December 14, 2016 – Just a few weeks after Brianna was born, her mother noticed a red growth on her daughter’s upper lip.  Her pediatrician referred the family to specialists who diagnosed the growth as an Infantile Hemangioma. On December 7th, Dr. Chad Perlyn of Nickalus Children's Hospital, removed the hemangioma.

Jose's SUPER Experience

November 10, 2016 – From the very moment the Genes family arrived at Nicklaus Children’s for treatment until Jose Jr. was cleared to return home, Genes says the hospital made the experience for his son and family a positive one.  

Soaring Through Life Seizure Free

November 04, 2016 – At two month’s old, Hannah underwent brain surgery (a temporal, occipital parietal resection) at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital to relieve her of her constant seizure activity after medication did not provide relief. This rare procedure involves removing the affected part of the brain for patients with severe epilepsy disorders. The surgery proved to be a success. She was completely off medications by the age of one and has been seizure free since the operation.

A Helping Hand for Hayden

November 02, 2016 – When Hayden Thomas was two-and-a-half years-old, Dr. Aaron Berger, Pediatric Plastic Surgeon at Nicklaus Children's Hospital who specializes in hand surgery,  introduced the Thomas family to 3D printing technology as an option to support the child’s progress and help prepare him for a prosthetic in the future.  

Patient of the Month: Astry

October 04, 2016 – After Astry was born, her parents noticed that she wasn't progressing as babies typically do. She wasn't able to lift her head and she showed a lot of muscle weakness. Her pediatrician recommended they take her to see a neurologist, and so Astry's parents brought her to Nicklaus Children's Hospital.

Gia’s Road to Remission

September 09, 2016 – Gia was born with Vacterl syndrome when she was just 3 years old after her mother noticed blood in her urine. Soon after, Gia was diagnosed with a tumor in one of her kidneys. Originally from Jamaica, the family moved to South Florida to pursue treatment at Nicklaus Children's Hospital.

Patient of the Month: Juan Pablo

September 08, 2016 – When he and his family were still living in Venezuela, Juan Pablo was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, an aggressive type of cancer. Watch Juan Pablo’s story and help us raise awareness throughout the month of September for Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.

Ruby’s Journey to Cancer Free

September 01, 2016 – Ruby began complaining of what she thought was a tummy ache. After two or three days with no improvement, her father made an appointment with a gastroenterologist at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, who discovered a mass in the child’s abdomen—it was cancer.

Sara's Fight for Sight

August 25, 2016 – When the attending pediatrician performed the neonatal screening on baby Sara, the doctor noticed that the newborn’s left eye was cloudy and unresponsive to light. The family was immediately referred to Nicklaus Children’s Division of Ophthalmology for a more thorough examination.
