To reflect the institute’s growth into a globally-recognized leader, it has rebranded from the Brain Institute to the Neuroscience Institute – a name that conveys its deep commitment to advancing care and meeting the needs of children and families everywhere.

Gene Therapy Offers New Hope for Children with Duchenne MD

January 23, 2025 – At Nicklaus Children's Hospital, gene therapy offers a promising treatment that dramatically improves life for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Recognizing the potential wielded by a new gene therapy, Nicklaus Children’s became one of the first in the nation to offer ELEVIDYS-dystrophin soon after the FDA's 2023 approval.

Tamryn Gets to Walk Again after Deep Brain Stimulation Treatment at Nicklaus Children's

July 15, 2024 – After Tamryn was diagnosed with TOR1-A Torsion Dystonia Type 1, a rare movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions and abnormal movements, he underwent surgery at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s to have a Deep Brain Stimulator (DBS) implanted.

A New Era of Care for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

November 29, 2023 – In 2023, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first gene therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). This much-needed treatment may slow or stop the progression of this debilitating and deadly disorder. Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is at the forefront of this advancement in care as one of the first hospitals in the U.S. and one of only three in Florida to offer gene therapy for DMD.

Research on revolutionary technology for incisionless treatment of brain tumors

December 03, 2021 – It sounds like a medical protocol straight out of a science fiction movie: A brain tumor neatly eliminated with an incisionless form of surgery. Five patients have undergone MR guided focused ultrasound at Nicklaus Children's with favorable results. Most were able to return home soon after their surgeries with reduced seizures and symptoms.

Speak Now For Kids Family Advocacy: Mark's Story

New Device Helps Children with Drug-Resistant Epilepsy Manage Seizures

April 25, 2018 – Grant is the first pediatric patient in South Florida to utilize the SenTiva VNS device, which is currently the smallest and lightest responsive therapy for epilepsy available on the market. The device, used in combination with epilepsy medications, has been shown to be effective in reducing seizure frequency and duration. 

Duchenne Regional Family Summit

December 02, 2017 – CureDuchenne Cares and The Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Brain Institute hosted a free educational and social event for Duchenne family and caregivers. Attendees were able to learn about important DMD care topics, share their practical advice and connect with other families.

Haiti Hydrocephalus Project

June 15, 2010 – In 2003 a team of medical volunteers, led by pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. John Ragheb, traveled to Haiti to perform surgery for children with hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is one of the most common treatable causes of neurological disability and death in the developing world.
The team has developed a comprehensive program in Port au Prince working the local medical community to develop Haiti’s first neurosurgery training program.  The team travels regularly to Haiti to teach and  help manage children and babies with hydrocephalus, providing care for more than 1,000 children to date in the island nation.
