Eric's Success Story

January 18, 2012 – Eric's mother was diagnosed with placenta previa and carefully carried him for just less than eight months. His world was great until he went into shock at three weeks old and was then rushed to Nicklaus Children's Hospital and his parents were told that the doctors were “not sure if what he had was compatible with life or not.”

Alexander's Success Story

January 18, 2012 – In January 13, 2005 Alexander was born with a congenital heart problem that would require open heart surgery as soon as possible. He was transferred to Nicklaus Children's Hospital's, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, emergency cardiology department.

Victoria Rose Success Story

January 12, 2012 – Victoria Rose was born with asymmetric crying facies in conjunction with a congenital heart disease (a small atrial septal defect) and developmental delay in speech, feeding and some physical setbacks along with sensory disorder. It has been a very long road for Vicky and her family as they have seen her change for the better throughout the past year upon receiving speech and physical therapy from Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital.

Victor's Success Story

January 12, 2012 – Victor was at Nicklaus Children's Hospital when he was seven years old due to his broken femur bone on his left leg. He missed an entire year of first grade. Being seven years old, it was difficult for him to realize what was going on. But the staff at Nicklaus Children's Hospital were there for him every step of the way, helping him get better.

Jennifer's Success Story

January 12, 2012 – An emergency cesarean was performed before Jennifer was born at 23 weeks and weighed only 14 ounces. She is now a small but an active 2-year-old.
 

Jake's Success Story

January 12, 2012 – Jake was born at Hollywood Memorial West. About five hours after his birth they discovered he had some heart problems. By the next day he was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped. That same day he was taken by helicopter to the best hospital in the world—Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital.

Cristina's Diabetes Success Story

January 12, 2012 – At the age of eleven Cristina was sent to the Variety Children’s Hospital ER for severe dehydration and other related symptoms. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes - juvenile diabetes in the ER. She was saved that day from a severe diabetic coma.

Casey's Success Story

January 12, 2012 – Casey was born on June 3, 1989 approximately four months premature and weighed less than 2 lbs. She was on ECMO for sixteen days, which is the longest at the time they have had an infant on it. Her lungs were so damaged that the biopsy samples they sent out for analysis were thought to be autopsy samples. She rode the Nicklaus Children's Hospital LifeFlight plane from Tampa to Miami and then back to St. Petersburg, and she was then transferred to All Children's Hospital.

Carin's Success Story

January 12, 2012 – Carin was diagnosed with medulloblastoma (a highly malignant primary brain tumor) at age eleven. She was operated on to remove the tumor, and she also had radiation treatments. She is thirty seven years old now and lives and works in Ohio.

Jayden's Success Story

January 12, 2012

Newborn Jayden had just been released from the hospital before something strange and unexpected happened. He was sleeping and he started jerking and having a seizure that continued as he was sleeping. Jayden was put in an incubator and rushed to Nicklaus Children's in an ambulance.

Amelia's Success Story

January 12, 2012 – Amelia was born with gastroschisis. She was taken into surgery the day she was born, days after she required yet another surgery adn was transferred to Nicklaus Children's Hospital via Life Flight for emergency surgery.

Jonas' Success Story

January 11, 2012 – Jonas was born with a condition called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped. He was diagnosed a little more than twenty four hours after birth. He was then  airlifted to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, where he had the first of three surgeries to repair his heart.

Patrick's Emergency Success Story

January 10, 2012 – Patrick was run over by a truck on June 9, 2009, and airlifted to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital. He was given only a 20 percent chance to live due to his injuries. He had two fractured ribs, lacerations on both lungs, a lacerated kidney, spleen and liver on his right side, and a severed kidney on the left. He also had two broken legs, his right arm was broken in two places, his pelvic bones were broken, his left eye bone was fractured, and his right elbow and shoulder were smashed.  Today, Patrick is alive, up and walking – running almost – and can even do some fifth grade school work.

Alexandra's Success Story

January 10, 2012 – Alexandra was rushed to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, and had her appendix removed. The doctor told her that if she had waited any longer, she could have died.

Shannon's Brain Surgery Success Story

January 09, 2012 – Shannon had brain surgery at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, in 2006-2007 and now receives periodic follow-up care from the Brain Institute. Directly after surgery, she went 10 months without a seizure while on medication.

Reese's Success Story

January 09, 2012 – After Reese’s birth in 2006, a prominent, bright red spot (hemangioma) appeared on her face, and around her eye. Reese began to receive monthly laser treatments to limit the growth and lighten or remove the large, prominent red vascular birthmark from her face.

Matthew's Sturge-Weber Syndrome Success Story

January 09, 2012 – When Matthew was just 6 weeks old, an MRI scan showed excessive blood vessel growth on the surface of his brain that was causing abnormal function. The scan confirmed Sturge-Weber Syndrome.

Lomaun's Success Story

January 09, 2012 – Lomaun, was born on February 17th, 1993. He was not due for another six weeks. He was going into fetal distress with every contraction and was delivered via Cesarean Section. He had many complications and washe was very sick. An ambulance came and took him to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital. A portion of the problems were: A hole in his heart, an enlarged liver, and only one kidney due to the other being atrophied. He was 8 pounds and 3 ounces at birth, despite being so very early. He "coded" twice, and both times the medical staff brought him back from certain death.

Leila's Success Story

January 09, 2012 – Leila had suffered for years with complications to ear infections and was constantly on antibiotics. A heavy snorer and also afflicted with severe sleep apnea, she had her tonsils removed at Nicklaus Children's Hospital.

Karly's Success Story

January 09, 2012 – In December 2008 Karly went to the emergency room for a high fever and cough. The doctors said she had pneumonia, then a CAT scan two days later showed that she had a tumor in her chest the size of a softball that was collapsing her left lung and compressing her spine. The next morning, Karly was taken via Life Flight to the Hospital, where a great oncology team was ready to treat her.
