Baby J's Journey

August 12, 2016 – Only a short week after been born, Baby J began to show signs of distress. A visit to the pediatric cardiologist revealed his heart was very sick. He was transferred to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital to await surgery for a crucial coarctation of the aorta.

Patient of the Month: Tonaly

August 08, 2016 – At just 17 years old, Tonaly was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a condition that kept her in the hospital for almost three months. Thanks to the treatment she received at Nicklaus Children’s, Tonaly no longer experiences the strong pains she once did, and with the help of Lisa, she developed the strength to face her condition head-on.

A Cure for Myles

August 04, 2016 – After losing the ability to see out of both eyes, Tinsley sought help at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Division of Ophthalmology, where it was determined that Myles had cataract, likely caused by long-term use of steroids. Within a week of the consultation, Myles underwent cataract surgery with Dr. Zenia Aguilera, a pediatric ophthalmologist.

Chase's Success Story

July 25, 2016 – Chase, is the epitome of a high school student athlete. Despite his many accomplishments, he developed a medical condition as a pre-teen called pectus excavatum (also known as sunken chest) that was leaving him winded, especially when swimming and running long distances.

Patient of the Month: Teegan

July 12, 2016 – Once the cardiac team met with Teegan and her family, the doctors realized that this was a case unlike any they had seen before. From before birth she had been diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and then they realized that she had a little less than half a heart and only one lung. Teegan's doctors and her parents knew she had a long road to recovery, but they were prepared to do whatever it takes to get her there.

South Florida surgeon helps fix craniofacial deformities in babies

July 07, 2016 – Local 10 News reports on Dr. Perlyn's complex surgeries to treat babies born with rare craniofacial deformities: Pierre Robin Sequence and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

Patient of the Month: Alexandra

June 21, 2016 – ​When she was 7 years old, Alexandra started experiencing pain, especially in her feet. At first, her parents thought maybe it was growing pains, or perhaps related to playing sports. It soon became clear that Alexandra had something much more serious when the pain became too much for her to even walk.

A Cancer Cure for Kira

June 01, 2016 – Kira, 13, can say “I beat cancer” in four languages: English, Portuguese, Italian and Spanish. The budding linguist and aspiring make-up artist (at least for the moment) is happy to have cancer in the rear view mirror after a 2014 bone marrow transplant that cured her of acute lymphocytic leukemia.

Young Girl Living with Chronic Lung Disease Beats All Odds

May 16, 2016 – Stephanie has beat all the odds that were working against her. Considered a “micro preemie,” her lungs were so underdeveloped she underwent a tracheostomy and placed on a ventilator to help her breathe. She is now a strong and rambunctious 11-year-old girl with a love for the arts and entertainment.

Patient of the Month: Emily

May 12, 2016 – Emily was born with Pierre-Robin sequence, a condition present at birth which tends to cause a small jaw, a tongue that is displaced back towards the throat and a cleft palate. She was brought her to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, where she underwent surgery to repair her cleft palate, and since then her life has completely turned around.

Angelica: Tiny Preemie Makes Big Strides

April 15, 2016 – The doctors and nurses at Nicklaus Children’s NICU were devoted to help premature baby Angelica, who was born with pulmonary complications.

Patient of the Month: Raquel

April 11, 2016 – At just 16 years old, Raquel was diagnosed with Pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She first noticed something was wrong in the summer of 2015 when she realized she had swollen glands behind her ear.

Patient of the Month: Andrew

March 03, 2016 – Andrew was born with chronic lung disease and has had to live his entire life connected to a ventilator that helps him breathe. He’s been receiving treatment at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital since he was three months old, and along the way he and his family were told about VACC Camp, a week-long camp free of charge for patients like him.

February 18, 2016 – Luna was born full-term in June 2011, and her family had no idea what was in store. After just a few short hours, doctors realized she was not receiving enough oxygen in her blood and knew it was serious.

January 13, 2016 – At age 10, Alessandra was diagnosed with scoliosis and started receiving treatment at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

A New Life for Danuel

Danuel Snelgrove was struggling during his junior year of high school. The epileptic seizures that had begun when he was 12 were getting increasingly violent and frequent, forcing the South Carolina teen to leave school in the spring of 2003.

Surgery Puts Sarah Back on Track

November 29, 2015 – Sarah was born with Noonan syndrome, a genetic condition that can result in spinal curvature and other abnormalities. She underwent her first surgery for scoliosis at age 13 with the Center for Spinal Disorders at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

Nicklaus Children's Hospital uses Stratasys' 3D printing technology to save a young girl's life

October 13, 2015 – Mia was born with an abnormal aortic arch. It's a rare congenital heart disorder, that can be difficult to diagnose. Children like Mia are often deemed "inoperable". Nicklaus Children's Hospital's Heart Institute used 3d printing technology to plan her complex cardiac surgery and find a solution to save her life. Mia is now a very active girl that loves dancing and baseball, she can go back to living her life to the fullest.

September 18, 2015 – Growing up, Izabella liked any and all sports, from soccer to baseball to whatever she could do outside. Then one day, her dad noticed her limping while she was playing. In an unfortunate twist of fate, Izabella was diagnosed with something that would affect her ability to keep playing sports, osteosarcoma.
