Also known as: blood spots, skin hemorrhages

What is purpura?

If small blood vessels burst and cause blood to pool below the skin, the resulting visible spots are known as purpura. In most cases, purpura is not concerning, though it can be a sign of an underlying medical condition.

What might cause purpura?

Causes of purpura can range from mild to severe and include the following:

• Low platelet count
• Certain medications
• Fragile blood vessels
• Blood vessel inflammation
• Steroid use
• Injections
• Injury
• Blood clotting disorders
• Childbirth
• Hormone replacement therapy
• Chemotherapy
• Cancer
• HIV infection

How can it be treated?

Many cases of purpura are benign and do not require treatment, but it’s a good idea to get them checked out by your doctor due to the conditions it may be related to.

When should you seek medical attention?

Contact your doctor any time you notice the signs or symptoms of purpura for proper diagnosis and treatment.
