December 18, 2023 – The Nicklaus Children's Comprehensive Epilepsy Center offers leading-edge techniques for epilepsy surgery, successfully performing more than 1,300 surgeries for medically resistant epilepsy since 1984. Leading-edge techniques include responsive neurostimulation, deep brain stimulation, and more recently, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

Nicklaus Children's Hospital to Study the Use of Low-Frequency Focused Ultrasound Therapy to Treat Children with Aggressive Brain Tumors

December 14, 2023 – Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is to become only the third site in North America involved in a Phase I clinical trial studying the role of a new technology called low-frequency focused ultrasound (LoFU) in the care of children with a lethal type of brain tumor that forms within the brainstem.

Our Team's Comprehensive Approach to Pediatric Thyroid and Endocrine Surgery

November 30, 2023 – While remaining relatively rare, Thyroid cancer is the most common form pediatric endocrine cancer, encompassing 6% of all pediatric cancers. Treatment doesn’t just start and end with surgery, Nicklaus Children's specialists and researchers are also examining the molecular makeup of thyroid carcinomas to better inform surgical techniques and treatment protocols.

November 29, 2023 – Bone and joint cancers account for a fraction of cancer cases in the U.S., and their rarity and a paucity of treatment options underscore the need for experienced, multidisciplinary care and novel solutions. Nicklaus Children's Hospital's Sarcoma and Solid Tumor Program delivers both options for children with these malignancies.

A New Era of Care for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

November 29, 2023 – In 2023, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first gene therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). This much-needed treatment may slow or stop the progression of this debilitating and deadly disorder. Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is at the forefront of this advancement in care as one of the first hospitals in the U.S. and one of only three in Florida to offer gene therapy for DMD.

Family Advisory Council (FAC) Service Award presented to Dr. Malvezzi

November 21, 2023 – The Family Advisory Council is happy to recognize the excellent and stellar efforts provided by Dr. Malvezzi during the second quarter of 2023. The following feedback was received about him: “He was compassionate, attentive, and professional while speaking to my daughter. He carefully discussed examples of everything in a soothing manner. He even provided examples that were in age-appropriate terms to explain the diagnosis and treatment.”

South Florida Family Life Readers Vote Nicklaus Children's as Family Favorite

July 12, 2023 – South Florida Family Life readers voted Nicklaus Children's as their favorite pediatric hospital in Miami Dade County. Additionally, Nicklaus Children's was voted the favorite special needs partner in the tri-county area.

Soaring to New Heights. 2022 was without a doubt a banner year for Nicklaus Children’s Health System, as we soared to new heights in fulfilling our commitment to the children and families of South Florida and beyond. We were honored to be ranked by U.S. News & World Report as a number one children’s hospital in Florida. What’s more, we were selected among the nation’s top children’s hospitals for quality and safety by the Leapfrog group. Based on staff surveys conducted nationally, Newsweek selected Nicklaus Children’s among the nation’s “Most Loved Workplaces,” an honor that is a measure of the respect, care and appreciation we demonstrate for those who serve the region’s children.

Nicklaus Children's Hospital Announces Historic Gift from Citadel Founder and CEO Kenneth C. Griffin

January 30, 2023 – Nicklaus Children’s Hospital officials today announced one of the largest single donations in the hospital’s 72-year history. The $25 million gift from Citadel founder and CEO Kenneth C. Griffin will support the new five-story, 127,000-square-foot surgical tower opening in 2024. In recognition of this historic gift, it will be named the Kenneth C. Griffin Surgical Tower.  

Dr. Salyakina honored as a March of Dimes Woman of Distinction

November 21, 2022 – March of Dimes awarded Director of Personalize Medicine and Health Outcomes Research, Daria Salyakina, Phd as a Woman of Distinction. Women of Distinction honors and celebrates women leaders in South Florida chosen by the community and selected by an esteemed committee of past recipients and distinguished women leaders with a complement of events that culminate with a grand luncheon.

Nicklaus Children's Cancer Warrior Performs National Anthem Ahead of Inter Miami vs Columbus Crew in Honor of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month

September 15, 2022 – Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is proud to have partnered with Inter Miami CF in support of the MLS’s Kick Childhood Cancer initiative during the Inter Miami CF vs Columbus Crew match. Despite a temporary game suspension due to lightning in the area, that didn’t stop 16-year-old Nicklaus Children’s patient Alexandra Herrera, and the Lourdes Singers from Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, from putting on a heartfelt performance of our national anthem minutes before kick-off.

Pain Awareness at Nicklaus Children's Hospital

September 12, 2022 – September is Pain Awareness Month. This month-long recognition was created to increase education and awareness within our community about the effects of pain, the available treatments to alleviate pain and the importance of communication with healthcare providers regarding pain-related concerns so that pain can be better understood and treated.

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center Designated a Level 4 Epilepsy Center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers

April 18, 2022 – Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center has been reaccredited as a level 4 epilepsy center for 2022-23 by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC). It is one of few pediatric epilepsy centers in the state designated as level 4.

Vivian and Juan Carlos Mas to be Inducted Into Ambassador David M. Walters International Pediatric Hall of Fame for Nicklaus Children's Hospital

February 14, 2022 – Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is pleased to announce that Juan Carlos (JC) Mas, chairman and CEO of Mas Group of Companies, Corp., and his wife Vivian Mas, are the 2021-2022 inductees to the Ambassador David M. Walters International Pediatric Hall of Fame. They will be recognized for their philanthropic support and contributions to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and the South Florida community at the 2021-2022 Diamond Ball taking place on Saturday, April 2 in Miami.

Research on revolutionary technology for incisionless treatment of brain tumors

December 03, 2021 – It sounds like a medical protocol straight out of a science fiction movie: A brain tumor neatly eliminated with an incisionless form of surgery. Five patients have undergone MR guided focused ultrasound at Nicklaus Children's with favorable results. Most were able to return home soon after their surgeries with reduced seizures and symptoms.

Nicklaus Children's Broadens Treatment Options for Congenital Heart Disease Patients with Minimally Invasive Therapy

November 18, 2021 – The Heart Institute at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is now offering pulmonary valve replacement via cardiac catheterization with the recently FDA-approved Harmony valve.

Dr. Khatib to receive Excellence Clinical Teaching Award

April 12, 2021 – We are happy to share that Dr. Ziad Khatib, Director of the Neuro Oncology Program at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has been selected to receive an Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award in Pediatrics from the Florida International University - Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.
