Urine Study

Also known as: urinanalysis.

What is a urine study?

A urine study refers to any test performed on the urine in order to check for general health or to diagnose a medical condition. A single urine specimen may be collected, or in some cases, urine is collected for a longer period of time, such as 24 hours.

What happens during the procedure?

The urine is collected in a special container. Then a lid is placed on the container, and the sample is sent to a laboratory for further analysis.

Is any special preparation needed?

This patient may need to avoid urinating for a period of time before the test in order to produce a urine sample for the test. Other tests may require that the patient avoid food, drink or medications.
