Patient of the Month: Adam

When Adam was three years old, his family's relocation to Florida forced his parents to "start from zero" with a new medical team to treat his stage four Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) – a condition that causes the kidneys to lose function over time. At Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Division of Nephrology, Adam met Dr. Nicole M. Christin, Inpatient and Outpatient Dialysis Medical Director and Nicklaus Children's Pediatric Specialists Section of Nephrology Chief.

After a few years of managing gastrointestinal issues and urinary tract issues that arose due to the complexity of his disease, doctors determined that Adam needed a kidney transplant surgery. In 2023, Adam’s kidney transplant was a success and led to height and weight development. While it was one of the toughest decisions his family would make, it was worth it.

Thanks to your support, Adam is able to receive the exceptional care he deserves from multidisciplinary experts at Nicklaus Children’s Division of Nephrology, Division of Endocrinology, and Division of Gastroenterology, throughout his development. Today, Adam is prospering as he manages his CKD and hopes to one day become a mathematician, engineer, or dog groomer.

ENT Surgeon Participates in Mission Trip to Peru

July 01, 2019 - Pediatric ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon Dr. Brian Ho recently participated in a mission trip to Cusco, Peru. The trip was organized by Support Our Smiles, a nonprofit comprised of medical professionals who volunteer their time to deliver comprehensive ENT care to underserved children around the world. Dr. Ho, in collaboration with colleagues from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Georgia, evaluated more than 100 children, performed more than 20 surgeries, visited a school for hearing-impaired children and conducted approximately 50 hearing tests. Dr. Ho looks forward to returning to Cusco for another mission trip this September.

Leonardo Finds His Voice

November 08, 2021 - Leonardo’s vocal cords were fused from birth, causing him difficulty breathing with any type of common cold and preventing the child from speaking. Fortunately, his condition was treatable and involved a surgery to separate his fused vocal cords into two healthy vocal cords. 

A New Beginning for Victoria

December 16, 2020 - A move to Miami in 2019 led to a happy transformation for little Victoria Carias and her parents. Victoria, who was born prematurely in 2015, still had the tracheostomy tube that was placed in her neck to support breathing when she was an infant. Thanks to the Airway Program at Nicklaus Children's Victoria successfully went through a trach tube removal (decannulation), which would make a big difference in her life.
