Tiny but Mighty: 1.2LB Baby Girl Leaves NICU After Three Months

Just a few days after baby girl Pierson was born, when she still weighed only 1.2 lb, a small catheter was placed through her vein to deliver a tiny device to treat her congenital heart defect all while she remained in her incubator.

Child Gets Second Chance at Life Thanks to Lifesaving Cancer Treatment

November 05, 2024 – Joffre Emmanuel, born with Down syndrome and later diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia, has defied the odds since birth. After unsuccessful treatment in Ecuador, he received lifesaving immunotherapy and CAR T-cell therapy at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, leading to significant improvements and is back to enjoying his childhood.

November 21, 2023 – Wildaline’s had a fast-growing benign tumor on her face was impeding her speech and about to cut her airwaves. She had just days to live.A multidisciplinary team of doctors and specialists moved swiftly to devise a plan and perform life-saving surgery so Wildaline could survive.

August 31, 2023 – Treatment options for Mikaela's scoliosis diagnosis was severely limited in Paraguay during the pandemic, so Mikaela's parents brought her to Nicklaus Children's Hospital. Thankfully, after undergoing a successful operation on her spine, Mikaela has restarted school and lives a more comfortable and confident life. 

Sofia's Inspiring Journey with SMA

July 26, 2023 – Sofia was born with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 2, a genetic condition that affects the spinal cord’s ability to control the muscles, decreasing and limiting mobility. In Sofia’s 6 years of life, she has already overcome more medical challenges than most adults.

Patient of the Month: Fabricio

March 31, 2023 – Fabricio was born prematurely at 32 weeks and spent 21 days in the ICU at a hospital in Colombia. Almost a year later Fabricio's family learned that he had spastic diplegic cerebral palsy, but it wasn't until a pediatric orthopedic surgeon visited Cartagena, Colombia on a mission trip where she met Fabricio and knew that she and her team at Nicklaus Children's could help.

August 29, 2022 – After a pregnancy checkup showed signs of possible cleft lip and palate, Reánnah and Andre took their soon to be born daughter Enya to the United States seeking care. After a healthy birth at a local hospital in Miami, Enya was transported for treatment and follow-up at Nicklaus Children's Hospital.

April 18, 2022 – After his ability to walk was severely limited, Graceston and his mother Curlene traveled from the Bahamas to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for a medical consult. Despite overwhelming personal and financial difficulties, Graceston is receiving vital corrective care and is continuing stronger than ever!

October 26, 2021 – Mariangel, born in a small town called Galerazamba, Colombia, was diagnosed in utero with cerebral palsy, a condition that affects mobility, balance and posture. After searching for answers for years, she finally found help after a Nicklaus Children’s Hospital pediatric orthopedic surgeon visited her hometown on a medical mission trip.

Infant flown from Puerto Rico days after Hurricane Maria for Lifesaving Surgery

September 19, 2018 – Naialee Perez had just given birth to her first child, a baby boy named Liam, when a category five hurricane was making its way towards her hometown in the island of Puerto Rico. Liam was on a ventilator and undergoing treatment for a congenital heart defect in Hospital del Niño in San Juan while those on the island prepared for what would become one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in its history.

July 19, 2017 – A team of surgeons from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Craniofacial Center performed a complex reconstructive surgery on a seven year-old child that will improve his vision and ability to eat, as well as his appearance and overall quality of life.

Hallie Travels Around the World for a Cure

March 14, 2017 – Hallie McKeithen traveled all the way from China to undergo surgery at Nicklaus Children's Brain Institute to treat her seizures. Thanks to the treatment received, Hallie is now seizure free. 

Gia’s Road to Remission

September 09, 2016 – Gia was born with Vacterl syndrome when she was just 3 years old after her mother noticed blood in her urine. Soon after, Gia was diagnosed with a tumor in one of her kidneys. Originally from Jamaica, the family moved to South Florida to pursue treatment at Nicklaus Children's Hospital.

January 19, 2015 – Leondre was born at just 24 weeks old weighting only 1lb, 9oz. A week after his birth, he was flown to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, to receive advanced care in the hospital’s Level 1 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
