PETALS Honoree: Dr. Patricio Lau
October 2025
On Tuesday, we witnessed an exceptional act of compassion and advocacy by one of our surgeons that truly exemplifies patient-centered care. A family arrived at an outside hospital with their child experiencing a fever. After 24 hours, they were transferred to Nicklaus Children's Hospital for surgery. Understandably, their anxiety was at an all-time high. After the patient was stabilized in PACU, we were informed that the patient would be transferring to a different unit than the one originally assigned at admission the previous day. Upon notification, the receiving unit raised concerns about the appropriateness of the admission, citing a deviation from standard pediatric policy; specifically, the patient being placed in a bed rather than a crib. They requested that all efforts be made to place the patient in a crib.
The PACU supervisor engaged in a detailed conversation with the family, explaining our safety concerns related to post-anesthesia recovery. However, due to the patient’s post-operative condition, including a large abdominal incision and an indwelling Foley catheter, the parents strongly felt that crib placement would be inappropriate and potentially harmful. After consulting with the Operations Administrator, it was determined that bed placement was clinically indicated to ensure the patient received safe and appropriate care.
What happened next was extraordinary.
The surgeon personally went to speak with the charge RN of the desired floor to advocate for the patient’s placement. He explained the situation, emphasized the importance of care, and prioritized the emotional and logistical needs of the family. His actions ensured that the patient was placed appropriately and that the family felt seen, heard, and supported during an incredibly stressful time. It is not every day that a surgeon steps outside of the operating room to directly engage in bed placement logistics, all for the sake of the family’s comfort and peace of mind. His dedication to holistic care and his willingness to go above and beyond is a shining example of the kind of leadership and empathy we strive for.
I truly feel that this moment deserves to be celebrated. He deserves to be recognized. Let it serve as a reminder that advocacy, compassion, and teamwork are just as critical as clinical excellence. I am proud to be part of Nicklaus Children's Hospital.
