“Our first child, Sebastian was born on 12 May 2010 in the Cayman Islands. Within ten hours he was diagnosed with tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), which meant that his esophagus was attached to his trachea instead of to his throat, and he was unable to eat. He was flown to Nicklaus Children's Hospital the day after he was born, and had the operation to repair the esophagus the following day. There were complications after the operation which meant that he stayed in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at Nicklaus Children's Hospital for a month after he was born. He is now fully recovered and is doing very well back in the Cayman Islands.
Whilst it was incredibly difficult for us to be separated from Sebastian for the first month of his life, Nicklaus Children's Hospital made it a much easier experience for us as all the people we encountered were friendly and supportive. The doctors made sure we understood each of the steps that were taken, and the nurses helped us to take part in caring for him as early and as much as possible. The lactation consultant was kind and very knowledgeable, and we even had parenting and CPR classes. We felt that Sebastian was in the best of hands.“
