What is subglottic stenosis?
The subglottis is the lower portion of the larynx (voice box), below the vocal cords. When the airway narrows at this point, this is known as subglottic stenosis.
What causes subglottic stenosis?
The exact cause of subglottic stenosis is not clear. Children who are born premature or need breathing assistance early in life are at a greater risk. Reflux and sepsis are two other risk factors for the disease.
What are the symptoms of subglottic stenosis?
Difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, croup, hoarseness and pauses in breathing (apnea) are common symptoms of subglottic stenosis.
What are subglottic stenosis care options?
Some cases of subglottic stenosis only require careful observation in order to monitor the symptoms. In more severe cases, surgery is needed to resolve the problems.
