Oligodactyly

Also known as: thumb hypoplasia/aplasia.

What is Oligodactyly?

Oligodactyly is the presence of fewer than five fingers or toes on the hand or foot. One of the more common types of oligodactyly is known as thumb hypoplasia/aplasia, in which the thumb is either smaller than it should be or is completely absence.

What Causes Oligodactyly?

Oligodactyly may have a genetic link.

Treatment of Oligodactyly

Treatment depends on the scope of the condition. Sometimes an operative procedure is called for. The Hand and Extremity Program team can support the family in determining the best treatment options.

Camptodactyly Camptodactyly refers to a flexion deformity of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the fingers. It may occur in just one finger, usually the pinky finer, or multiple fingers. It may be present in both hands or just one hand.
Congenital Hand Malformation Any problem with the hands that develops in a fetus while it’s still in the uterus is known as a congenital hand malformation.
Clinodactyly Clinodactyly refers to curvature of a finger in the plane of the palm. The condition most commonly affects the pinky finger.
Pollicization Surgery Pollicization is a type of hand surgery used to treat a missing or underdeveloped thumb.
