Miami, FL – A group of five dietetic interns from La Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala concluded their two-month training at Miami Children's Hospital (MCH) as part of the Global Health Services department’s teaching program. The interns rotated throughout hospitals in Guatemala for over a year and a half before having the opportunity to train at Miami Children's Hospital.

Global Health Services has collaborated with La Universidad Francisco Marroquin with teaching programs for several years; however, this fortunate group of interns experienced the longest training period to date. 

The Latin American nutritionists worked closely with the hospital’s clinical dietitians throughout the program. Job tasks included: completing consults, providing education to patients and their families, and food service management rotation. The group took part in lectures regarding infant nutrition from birth to 12 months and developed a 5-part lecture series on various nutrition topics that the hospital plans to utilize in the future.

“At Miami Children's Hospital, the interns learned techniques and used products that are not used in Guatemala or aren’t available,” said Andrea Maggioni M.D., Hospitalist, Global Health Services. “They can now apply everything they learned here to the children in Guatemala.”
