From first steps to pirouettes and fast pitches, sitting up to standing tall, the musculoskeletal system comes into play at every phase of a child's growth and development. Indeed, children's orthopedic needs are very different from those of adults. Central to children's care is a focus on treatment of pediatric disorders and injuries while protecting children's growth plates to support future bone development. Similarly, care for spinal conditions such as scoliosis that are identified and treated in childhood, requires highly specialized knowledge and treatment techniques that few programs offer.
The Orthopedic, Sports Medicine and Spine Institute at Nicklaus Children's Hospital brings together an experienced and innovative team of highly trained, compassionate and bilingual orthopedic technicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurse coordinators, support personnel, residents, and fellows. Our physicians perform over 1,500 surgical procedures each year, while the pediatric orthopedic surgery department facilitates an additional 35,000 outpatient visits annually. The program is Florida's leading provider of scoliosis surgical care, conducting more than 200 spine surgeries each year, more than any other pediatric facility in the state.

The Orthopedic, Sports Medicine and Spine Institute is comprised of a dedicated team of orthopedic surgeons, specialists and advanced practice professionals specialized in pediatric orthopedic care, fracture care, sports injury management, and other pediatric needs. The team offers timely appointments for acute sports injuries and fracture care in over seven locations throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.
For after-hours care when the orthopedic clinics are closed, Nicklaus Children's pediatric urgent care facilities, South Florida's only pediatric urgent care centers exclusively for kids, are open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., to evaluate, diagnose and treat children and adolescents under age 21 with minor injuries and fractures. Follow up care is then offered within the week with an orthopedic specialist at one of our seven community-based locations throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.
A pediatric orthopedic doctor is called a pediatric orthopedic surgeon or a pediatric orthopedist. These specialists diagnose and treat bone, joint, and muscle conditions in children and teens. The Miguel "Mike" B. Fernandez Family Pediatric Trauma Center at Nicklaus Children's Hospital Emergency Department, home of only two freestanding pediatric trauma centers in the state of Florida and the only freestanding pediatric trauma center in South Florida, also offers emergency orthopedic care and is open 24 hours a day.
In addition, Nicklaus Children's collaborates with Jupiter Medical Center to offer pediatric emergency services in Palm Beach County.

The Orthopedic, Sports Medicine and Spine Institute is now located on the third floor of the George E. Batchelor Research and Academic Pavilion at Nicklaus Children's Hospital. Families are encouraged to park in the Yellow Garage, where complimentary parking is available. Walkways on the first and fourth floors of the garage are available for convenient access to the clinic space.
