What is trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is a bacterial infection that is transmitted sexually. Both men and women can acquire the disease, but it usually only causes symptoms in women.

What causes trichomoniasis?

The intracellular bacterial agent that causes trichomoniasis is transmitted sexually through vaginal, oral or anal intercourse.

What are the symptoms of trichomoniasis?

Women with trichomoniasis may experience vaginal redness, burning, itching, pain and a colored, foul-smelling discharge. Symptoms in men are rare but may include burning, irritation or a discharge from the penis.

Antibiotics can resolve many cases of trichomoniasis.
