What are skin infections?

Infections of the skin can occur in a variety of different forms. Most of them present with some sort of rash, blemish, bump, or nodule, that is present on the skin, though other symptoms can also be present. They can range widely in nature and severity.

What causes skin infections?

Skin infections can be caused by viruses, fungi, parasites or bacteria. Some are contagious, while others are contracted by coming in contact with an infected surface.

What are the symptoms of skin infections?

Though they can range widely, most skin infections present with some sort of physical sign on the actual skin, including rashes, blisters, pus, darker skin or others. Itching, pain, redness, tenderness and swelling are other common symptoms.

What are the treatments for skin infections?

Treatment will range widely based on the nature of the infection, and may include oral and topical medications, antibiotics, or surgery depending on the cause and severity of the disease and symptoms. Medications to manage fever and itching, with local compresses, and/or other topical medications may help manage symptoms.
