What is pityriasis rosea?

Pityriasis rosea is a medical condition that causes red rashes on the skin. It’s fairly common and usually doesn’t lead to severe complications beyond the presence of the rash.

What causes pityriasis rosea?

The cause of pityriasis rosea is not known. It may be caused by a virus, but this has not been proven.

What are the symptoms of pityriasis rosea?

An obvious sign of pityriasis rosea is a larger “mother patch” that appears first, followed shortly after by smaller patches in the surround area. The patches often appear on the back, arms, legs, abdomen and chest. Itchiness is also common.

What are pityriasis rosea care options?

Pityriasis rosea usually resolves on its own after 6 to 8 weeks. Medication may be prescribed to help with the itchiness related to the condition.
