Melorheostosis

Also known as: Leri disease.

What is melorheostosis?

Melorheostosis is a rare genetic disorder that affects that cortex, which is the outer layer of the bones. Individuals with melorheostosis experience growth of the cortical bone that continues even when it should stop, causing the cortex to thicken and widen. The result can be chronic pain and problems with the joints and mobility.

What causes melorheostosis?

Melorheostosis is thought to be tied to a genetic mutation, but the exact cause of the illness isn’t known. The condition can be passed down from parents to children in very rare instances.

What are the symptoms of melorheostosis?

Symptoms of melorheostosis can include:

  • chronic pain
  • joint swelling
  • muscle contractures
  • problems with range of motion
  • shortened limbs
  • irregular bone growth
  • limb swelling
  • nerve compression
  • stiffness

and other problems related to the bones, joints and muscles.

What are melorheostosis care options?

There is no cure for melorheostosis. Care is focused on minimizing the symptoms. This includes surgery, physical therapy, occupational therapy, hydrotherapy and medications to help with pain and also to assist with the bone remodeling process.
