What is hyperparathyroidism?

The body has four parathyroid glands located in the neck. These produce parathyroid hormone that regulates calcium levels in the bloodstream and tissues. When the glands produce too much parathyroid hormone, this is known as hyperparathyroidism.

What causes hyperparathyroidism?

Hyperparathyroidism may occur due to calcium or vitamin D deficiency, a growth on the glands, enlargement of the glands, cancer or other causes.

What are the symptoms of hyperparathyroidism?

Possible symptoms of hyperparathyroidism include osteoporosis, kidney stones, excessive urination, abdominal pain, fatigue, depression, joint pain and other symptoms.

What are hyperparathyroidism care options?

In most cases, surgery to remove the impacted parathyroid glands is successful in treating the condition. Certain medications or hormone replacement therapy can also be helpful.
