Dear Friends,
The world is a great big place – one that can seem especially daunting for
families of children in far flung locations where healhcare access is a challenge.
In 2013, Miami Children’s Health System took a giant step in bringing the
world down to size for the littlest of patients.
MCH Anywhere was born of the health system’s commitment to be where the children
are. The program uses state-of-the-art technology to bridge the challenges of time and
distance to bring children, families and referrers together with Miami Children’s specialists
who can offer the guidance they need.
Our state-of-the-art Telehealth Center, situated on the main campus, is making it
possible for doctors in Peru, Russia and beyond to discuss complex cases and share
essential medical data to better the lives of children anywhere the need arises.
Anywhere is a tall order. Miami Children’s Health System is up to the challenge. And even
as we reach around the globe to offer care insight and second opinions, we are also hard at
work to expand access to the system’s world-class care here in South Florida.
In 2013, we opened a new ambulatory care center in Miami Lakes to extend service
convenience to the community. This facility joins the network of eight outpatient facilities
situated from Palm Beach Gardens to Palmetto Bay that bear the Miami Children’s name
and commitment to pediatric care excellence.
We are also forging important partnerships to enhance service access. Our 2013 affiliation
with Jupiter Medical Center is the latest in our expanding commitment to the Palm
Beach community.
Anywhere indeed. You’ll find the inspiration of Miami Children’s physicians in surprising
places. Our KidzStuff ™ retail brand, founded in 2013, features a range of innovative
children’s products designed by pediatricians to solve everyday problems.
Anywhere requires collaboration. We extend sincere thanks to our physicians, nurses,
care staff, donors, volunteers and all members of the Miami Children’s Health System
family for sharing this commitment in 2013 and beyond.
Sincerely,
M. Narendra Kini, MD, MHA
President and CEO
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Miami Children’s Health System is committed to serving children
anywhere
and everywhere. In
2013, through our MCH Anywhere telehealth program, the caring hearts of our medical staff
touched the lives of children and families around the world in ways previously unimagined.
Other highlights of the year of
anywhere
are many:
• A team of surgeons and cancer specialists offered new hope for the family of a little girl
from Russia with an aggressive form of cancer. After a lengthy procedure to remove
cancerous lesions, the child received “heated chemotherapy” to destroy any remaining
cancer cells. Today she is back home and remains cancer free.
• The hospital’s commitment to offering free EKGs to prevent sudden cardiac death among
student athletes led to a potentially life-saving intervention. A teen lacrosse player who
participated in the screening was discovered to have a heart condition that could have
caused him to collapse on the playing field. Following a minimally invasive procedure, he’s
back at school and in sports.
• Physician leaders in the hospital’s Heart Program and Brain Institute led research initiatives
that promise new generations of treatment to help children with complex disorders.
• Miami Children’s was again ranked in all 10 pediatric subspecialties assessed by
U.S.News
and World Report
, with the neurology/neurosurgery programs ranked 10th in the nation.
• Our medical staff grew to represent the largest collaboration of pediatricians and pediatric
subspecialists in all of Florida
.
• Miami Children’s pediatric residency training program continues to boast the highest
American Board of Pediatrics pass rate among programs in the state of Florida
.
It is a great privilege to lead and work with a medical staff that continuously seeks to innovate,
diversify and adopt new techniques to make a difference in the lives of children. It is an honor to
lead such a fine group of clinicians, researchers and academicians whose principal mission is to
bring hope through superior care to children from any corner of the world.
Heartfelt appreciation is extended to our community, to our referring physicians and most
importantly to the families who entrust us with the care of their children, every day and
anywhere.
Sincerely,
